Giant Yarn Easter Eggs

Pintopia Week 1: Easter is very difficult to decorate for! My husband and I had a fun craft night last week making these giant Easter eggs...

Supplies:
Yarn (white or colored)
Balloons (various sizes)
Vaseline
Corn Starch
Hot Water
Whisk
Food Coloring (optional)

1.) First you need to cook up the wallpaper paste:
Sift 1/2 C. of cornstarch into a large pot. Slowly add 8 C. of hot tap water a little bit at a time.  Whisk thoroughly after each addition of water with a wire whisk.  Heat mixture over medium high heat on the stove, stirring constantly, until it thickens and becomes clear. Remove from heat and cool until room temperature before using.

2.) Separate paste into several containers and mix your choice of food coloring into each container
3.) Blow up your balloons to the sizes you want and then cover completely with Vaseline
4.) Feed the yarn into the paste and push into the bowl to saturate.
5.) Wrap pasted yarn around the balloon in whatever manner you like. Matte down ends into another piece of yarn

6.) Set wet balloon on a bowl or a cup for 24+ hours, until completely dry.

7.) Pop the balloon and you're done!!! (make sure you don't leave balloon fragments behind, the are a SERIOUS CHOKING HAZARD for the little ones)

We sprayed ours with a clear spray paint enamel and then with some scotch guard. They have lost a little of their brightness, but have held their shape very well through several rains.
Happy Pinning!

Update:

Thanks to a wonderful comment, We took one of our eggs and cut it to make an Easter basket for little Brantley! He sure loved it :)

  1. That is a fun project! I did that years ago with my children at Easter. I then cut the tops with a handle and made baskets out of them.
